Bustling through a windy and relentless downpour, I attended a powerhouse performance of Terrence McNally’s new Broadway play Mothers and Sons during opening week, sharing the theatre with an enthusiastic audience (including Tony Award winner William Ivey Long a few seats away and the executive director of Actor’s Equity Association) who leapt to their feet for curtain call.
The play, superbly written and exquisitely acted, provides a glimpse of a troubled relationship between a man and his deceased partner’s mother as they navigate the rocky terrain between them when the mother returns to his life to give back a diary that belonged to her deceased son and which neither of them has read.
The drama provides sharp insight, heart wrenching pathos and, at times, tremendous comedy. This production is not to be missed, with a fantastic cast headed by the incomparable Tyne Daly and a stunning set to compliment the action. Catch this show before it sells out at Mothers and Sons on Broadway!
