While on a visit to the town of Port Jervis, NY, I discovered a superb vegan restaurant called Fogwood + Fig. Situated on Front Street, this little place is a big delight showcasing “small batch from scratch vegetable comfort food.”
Using fresh ingredients sourced from Kittantiny Farm, the menu is varied and interesting with a focus on plant based “burgers”—the highlight being their Flirty Burger, a concoction consisting of a smoky black lentil mushroom patty with a chili cherry sauce. I went for the Warm Farro Grain Bowl which was astounding for its multi-layered range of textures, herbs and spices with a dollop of yogurt on the side. There were so many flavors every bite held a new taste surprise.
They also offer special daily ice teas. I tried the lemon ginger which was perfectly bright and tangy.
The charming husband and wife duo behind the restaurant felt that vegan food was often bland and lacked appeal on the palate. They set out to change this with inventive recipes and thoughtful flavor combinations that bring vegetables to life in a really exciting and delicious way.
